The problem businesses face isn't using Alibaba, it's using Alibaba and assuming all possible options are high-quality and a good match for their business needs. 

If you're trying to vet a supplier on your own, consider some of the following tips:

• Check communication: If a supplier struggles to communicate, then you should probably choose another supplier. You may not see this immediately, as many factory managers will use online translators. This works well enough for basic communication, but won't be enough for detailed negotiations or communicating product needs. 
• Request samples: You should request samples any time it is feasible to do so, which is the vast majority of the time (an example of when it's not feasible is if you are sourcing a single piece of heavy machinery).   ‍
• Visit the factories: If you're serious about vetting a factory, you should determine how you can visit the factory in-person. This allows you to see their general operations, how they enforce quality control, and makes it easy to meet factory managers or owners.

Developing a prototype is very product dependent, so the following steps won't be exact. Consider them a general framework for how prototypes are often developed:

• Customize or build from scratch: First, you'll decide if you're going to take an existing spin brush and customize it, or if you are going to design one from the ground up. 
• Create design: Next, you need to have very detailed design plans. You aren't going to develop design plans with a factory, you are going to deliver completed design plans, knowing that you may need to tweak certain design parameters. 
• Find a factory: Next, you'll look for a factory that has the engineering capability to customize or create a novel product. 
• Deliver designs: Now, your business delivers design details to the factory. If the factory says that a certain design needs to be tweaked, you need to work with them to understand why and what alternatives there may be. 
• 3D printing: You often won't make a fully completed prototype right off the bat. Instead, the factory will make a 3D printing of your prototype and ship it to you. This will let you see if your design actually works. If there's a critical flaw, you can make design changes before you create molds, tools, and have a genuine prototype. 
• Molds and tools: If your 3D printing looks good, it's time to invest in tooling and molds. Molds help form the pieces of your spin brush, while tools help to craft the intricate parts of your product. This will easily be the most expensive part of developing a prototype, which can easily be in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. 
• Prototype production: Finally, you can create a genuine prototype. Since this won't be at a massive scale, your prototypes will generally be far more expensive than your mass produced products will be. 
• Mass production: If you like your prototype, then you'll move to general mass production.
